Trawick International Travel Insurance Review

Travel insurance works by reimbursing you for prepaid trip costs if a trip gets canceled or interrupted, and some plans include coverage for emergency medical bills.

Trawick International is one of our top-rated travel insurance providers, protecting U.S. residents when they travel abroad. They also offer coverage for non-U.S. students temporarily residing outside of their home country for their studies. In this review, we cover what types of policies Trawick International offers and how much policies cost for a sample trip.

Trawick International Travel Insurance Overview

Trawick International has a portfolio of customizable travel insurance plans, and it’s a company we recommend for having well-rounded coverage. The most basic plans include trip cancellation and interruption coverage, but you may add on extras like rental car damage coverage. Plus, premium-tier plans come with higher protection limits and specialized coverage, such as insurance for rental property damage.

Trip protection aside, what sets Trawick International apart from other companies is its medical insurance for international students and scholars. College Care policies offer health care for students studying, teaching or doing educational research in the U.S.A., and deductibles start at $150. College Care plans may include maternity coverage, emergency evacuation coverage and reimbursement of medical costs for sicknesses, including COVID-19.

Cost of Trawick Travel Insurance

The cost of travel insurance can depend on your age, how much your trip costs and how long you’re going for. To give you an idea of costs, we created two scenarios.

Cost of International Travel Insurance

Below is an estimate for a travel insurance policy for an international trip to Barbados. Two U.S. citizens are traveling, and the traveler ages are 35 years old and 27 years old. The total trip price is $4,000, and the trip starts on June 2, 2023 with a return date of June 16, 2023. The initial trip deposit was made on April 10, 2023.

Cost of Domestic Travel Insurance

Below is an estimate for a domestic trip for the same two adults mentioned above. The trip costs $4,000 and starts June 2, 2023 and ends June 16, 2023. The trip deposit was made on April 10, 2023. In this example, we see that costs increase substantially when adding optional coverage.

Trawick Customer Reviews

Trawick International gets 4.5 out of 5 stars from over 400 reviews on Trustpilot. Many customers report that representatives are friendly and knowledgeable. However, some customers complain that the company is unresponsive when they file a claim and that it can take months to have a claim resolved. Below are company reviews found on Trustpilot. We emailed Trawick International for a comment on the reviews and have not yet received a response.

“We had purchased travel insurance with Trawick for a trip in March, but the morning of the trip we had a medical emergency that made it impossible for us to travel. I thought there was no way to use the policy on our new travel dates but I reached out to Trawick’s customer service and they were very helpful! They asked me for documentation to prove we rescheduled our trip and when I provided it they changed the dates on our policy so that we can use it during our re-scheduled trip. Thank you!” —Juliana González Tobón

“I have always been hesitant about travel insurance, but I’m so grateful I finally started using Trawick. Getting Trawick insurance was a lifesaver for our Hawaii trip! Our flights got completely changed through the airline, and we had to completely rebook putting us in a real financial bind. Luckily, with all the appropriate paperwork, I submitted a request, and got refunded through Trawick due to the trip delay. We will be getting travel insurance through Trawick for every trip we go on from now on!” —Kaelan Young

“Trip to Peru/Machu Picchu was canceled due to several issues in Peru, [primarily] being no train service to Machu Picchu. Trawick provided conflicting information on whether the claim was covered. It is clear that they are doing everything they can to avoid paying a claim, or provide other options, as promised. Use another, reputable insurance provider!” —Peter Lievense

“They are constantly deferring the final resolution of the claim by 15 business days. After those elapse, they say wait another 15 business days and you get in a vicious cycle when they do not provide resolution EVER! I have had an incident on my trip a few months ago, but they are constantly ignoring my emails and do not provide any resolution.” —K. Stefanov

The Bottom Line

Trawick International provides a number of policy options, some without frills and others with higher limits for trip interruption coverage and extra features. However, a downside to having so many options is that it could be tougher to decipher plan details to determine which coverage would be best for your situation.

In addition to standard plans, Trawick also has specialized plans for international scholars studying abroad. If in doubt, you could contact Trawick International by phone or use the website’s chat feature to ask questions about plans.
